Agatha was going to meet Marianne Lor. That, alone, was a spectacular fact, shining brilliantly in her mind so that it almost obscured all other thoughts. It was, however, not the only thing currently being drummed into her brain. She and Jacqueline were lying next to one another in bed, touching each other carefully, cautiously, as they explored what their feelings might mean.

Agatha's hand had wandered up the front of Jacqueline's silk pajamas, playing languidly with her nipple while Jacqueline allowed herself to relish the sensation. Going slowly was actually nice, thought Agatha. There was no pressure to reach a finish line or know exactly what you were doing.

And she was definitely in uncharted waters.

The few relationships Agatha had sustained in the past had grown out of friendships, nerdy affairs that were more about shared interests than chemistry. She had no clue how to act in a situation where the chemistry came first. Sometimes when she looked at Jacqueline, all she could see was that stranger who she'd sparred with verbally in a bar. Weren't they too different to get along?

Current evidence suggested the opposite. Agatha's heart hammered in her chest as she let the night progress slowly in the expensive cotton sheets of Jacqueline's bed. Her surroundings still stunned her, from the chandelier above the bed to the gleaming floors. At least now, Agatha didn't have to struggle with guilt about allowing Jacqueline to pay her excessive amounts of money.

Yes, it would suck to go back to her job in Santa Fe knowing that she could have been that much richer, that much freer to do what she wanted in life. But Agatha could also picture staring at her ceiling in bed late at night, wishing she'd been less easily swayed by cash. That guilt was already more real than the drudgery of her job. And now she wouldn't have to process it.

She got to meet Marianne Lor instead. The thrill was almost equal in measure to the terror Agatha felt wondering if Marianne would ask about her career plans, somehow getting it out of her that she didn't have an agent. Marianne would know that she wasn't serious about her work. She'd judge her wanting and blow her off. And it wasn't just that Marianne would judge; Agatha was still wanting.

"Are you ok?" asked Jacqueline, sensing that Agatha was distracted. Though Agatha nodded, Jacqueline was not convinced. She pushed her pajama top down and readjusted the blankets around them. "I think we should get some sleep."

It wasn't the course Agatha thought the night would take, but she had to admit it made sense now. There were still books to sell, still convention tips to give Jacqueline so that she could feel she'd earned her place meeting Marianne. She had to stop calling her Marianne in her head—what if she called her by her first name in person, and Marianne chastised her for being too familiar?

"You're right," said Agatha finally. "We're tired. Cons are so busy. But thanks for a wonderful night.
